Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
